of Inland Lot No. 897. lt will be seen that such arrange-

ment was come to, thus clearing off the only possible

objector.

The Government having decided to sell (grant a crown

-

Lease the local tenure) the next step, as a sale to the

Company by private treaty was not permitted by Government

land sale practice, was to prepare conditions of sale by

public auction, at which the Company could complete and

become, if the highest bidder, the purchaser.

These conditions were published in the Government

Gazette of 24th June, 1893.

The Conditions of Sale allowed, but did not compel the

purchaser to construct a reservoir on the Lot.

At the public auction sale held on 11th July, 1893,

the Tai Koo Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. was declared the

purchaser.

The usual agreement at foot of the conditions was duly

signed, and the Company was given possession of the Lot,

which became known and was registered as Inland Lot No.

1336.

The sale was followed by a crown Lease, dated 2nd

September, 1895, in the then usual form in which no refer-

ence to water rights appears.

Subsequently the Company having constructed a reservoir

in exercise of the right or option so to do, called for a

Deed, supplemental to the Crown Lease, dealing with the

water rights.

A supplemental deed, dated 5th August, 1896, was

indorsed on the Crown Lease, and an arrangement satisfying

the requirements of Inland Lot 897 was completed.
